Preparing For the Class
The Burbank CERT Class is taught using an adult learning model where participants will get out of the class as much as they are willing to put into the class. Because of the amount of information and hands-on participation that is involved in our class; participants are expected to be at class each day on time as the class will start promptly.
Closed toe shoes and long pants are required for each of the classes. Basic Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) will be issued on day 1 of the class (helmet, and one size fits all goggles) as part of the CERT backpack participants will receive; however since hand sizes vary, participants need to bring a comfortable pair of work gloves. (We will have one size fits all "loaner" gloves that participants can borrow and use at class if a participant does not have their own gloves with them).
A significant portion of the class instruction is hands-on training conducted outdoors, outdoor training takes place rain or shine; please dress accordingly for forecasted weather conditions. As we all know, Southern California can be warm all year round and as such, all participants should bring a reusable water bottle or canteen to class and are highly encouraged to bring a hat.
Prospective CERT students are encouraged, though not required, to prepare for the class through the Citizen Corps' free, online Independent Study course. This online course is also an excellent refresher for previous CERT graduates.
